Alabama occupies a special place in American history, holding many sites where Americans put their lives on the line fighting for equality and freedom. Discover firsthand the places and people that made the country what it is today, and become an important part of the recovery process for thousands of Americans who lost their homes and their stability in the wake of a natural disaster.
Visit historic Birmingham, a city that holds many stories of the American civil rights movement. Birmingham is a medium-sized city that balances modernity with the Southern charm that makes it special. Trace the movements of activists and motivators of the time through the town, follow the path down to Montgomery, where some of the most famous protests happened, understand the movements of the Freedom Riders (who finally completed their journey in 2011), and learn about the people who made history to ensure better lives for all Americans.
On April 27th, 2011 a tornado tore through parts of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and destroyed a swath of land up to a mile wide, leaving residents to pick up the pieces. Tornados often come without warning, and many people lost their homes and their lives in the active 2011 season. Join in the rebuilding efforts and help support the families and communities that were affected. Give one week this spring to your Southern neighbors!
