Time to Teach
Rustic Pathways is proud to expand its domestic service opportunities this summer 2012, and thrilled to be offering yet another program in cooperation with Save the Children. Here in the Appalachian region of Kentucky, Save the Children works to improve education in an area of the U.S where the majority of the population lives in poverty. The resulting social, physical and educational hardships can create insurmountable challenges for the youth of this region and put them at a disadvantage in the classroom. Through Save the Children's academic summer camp, elementary school children receive much needed literacy support and programming during June and July, the time that poses the greatest risk for falling behind academically. At this summer camp you will be a tutor, teacher and counselor to a small group of children eager to learn about you and your hometown. Math, science, physical education and reading are all a part of each day's core curriculum and you will have a hands-on role in leading students through each game and lesson. You will also have the opportunity to create and run your own enrichment activity, whether it be yoga, improve, or Ultimate Frisbee!
The Bluegrass State
The rolling hills and mountains of Kentucky are a breathtaking wilderness that will be ours to explore. Much of your free time on the program will be spent swimming, hiking, and sightseeing in the unassuming beauty of this Bluegrass State. Give country music a try, taste some Kentucky barbecue, and discover the rich folk art culture preserved throughout the Appalachian Mountains.
Who Should Come?
This is an advanced service program for truly independent and motivated high school students. You will be expected to plan and lead camp activities with very little support from your Rustic Pathways staff, and to get creative when it comes to finding fun ways to inspire these elementary school students into reading and learning. Experience with mentoring, teaching and working with kids is a definite plus. Because of the reading, math, and science curriculum built into this summer camp, both Rustic Pathways and Save the Children are looking for bright and engaging high schoolers who will supplement this curriculum in fun and exciting ways. All applicants will be contacted by the Rustic Pathways Program Manager to ensure that this is the best fit program.
