  • Description

Since 2006, Rustic Pathways has been helping to rebuild the city of New Orleans and the surrounding parishes through direct service and education about the levee breaches, the aftermath, and the recovery. In the process of rebuilding, New Orleanians have embraced unity, identity, and innovation, taking the opportunity to improve upon existing processes and ways of doing things. Building on the very successful Rebuilding New Orleans program, Rustic Pathways is offering a new two-week trip that will take an in-depth look at the ways the city and the surrounding parishes are taking steps towards being smarter, greener, and more community-oriented.

When the levees broke in August 2005, New Orleans changed forever. Up to 20 feet of water rushed through the eighteen breaches in the city's levee system, flooding more than 80 percent of the city. The recovery process has been slow and methodical, and organizations, individuals, and community groups have taken on the task of recovering what was lost and protecting the citizens from another disaster. Join RP in investigating the recovery process, pinpointing the heroes, contributing to great efforts, enjoying the celebrations, finding out how to continue the momentum, and reveling in the chutzpah of New Orleans.

Come find out what makes the city special, what sustained New Orleanians when they thought all was lost, what brought so many people back to a place that was underwater, and what the future of New Orleans holds. This is an advanced program for students who are interested in learning more about New Orleans and what it takes to rebuild a major American city. Prior participation in the Rebuilding New Orleans program is not required, but students must meet the minimum age requirement.
