Service that Makes a Difference
Though access to effective medical treatment has steadily improved in Thailand over the past two decades, availability of high-quality care in rural Northern Thailand is still inconsistent especially among elderly patients. Many easily preventable diseases are common due to lack of basic health monitoring or availability of local health infrastructure. You can be a part of the solution to this problem. You will develop the necessary skills as you earn your Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR certification and then put those skills to work in rural villages, where you will be on the front lines of community-based healthcare.
Apply Your Skills while Immersing Yourself in Local Culture
The Ricefields Base offers students the chance to really immerse themselves in the local community and learn about daily life in rural Thailand. You will relish the flavors of the region's unique cuisine, experience the diversity of Thai culture, make tons of local friends, and dive into the fascinating world of Buddhism. Deepen your connections with the community as you apply all of the skills you have learned while studying your WFA certification, and gain valuable experience working hands-on with people who need your help. Learning this medical foundation while having the chance to gain confidence through the focused service work is the perfect way to get meaningful, real-world experience in this ever-important field.
Go Home Empowered
After developing your medical skills in Thailand, you will go home empowered to make a difference elsewhere. Your new Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR certification will allow you to apply the knowledge and skills you acquired in Thailand in many different ways when you return home. The lessons you learned about community-based healthcare and your firsthand experience will encourage you to think critically about how healthcare is delivered around the world and how you can make a difference.
What's Wilderness First Aid (WFA) & CPR Certification
While volunteering in Thailand, you'll have an opportunity to earn a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR certification. This practice-based certification focuses on providing practical knowledge and skills that will allow you to give medical assistance in locations where access to advanced care is limited.
You'll learn how to assess and triage injury, recognize and manage life-threatening wounds, provide basic life support, such as CPR and basic airway management, evaluate problems with major body systems, and determine when a patient needs to be evacuated.
Furthermore, you'll learn how to manage shock, allergic reactions, and temperature-related illness. You'll gain practical knowledge about how to safely manage spinal injuries and the best way to stabilize a patient before evacuation. Most importantly, you'll gain knowledge about how to recognize the critical warning signs of major illness in various body systems.
