  • Description

    Summer in the Sun
Welcome to Arizona and the American West, a land of wide-open spaces, beautiful sights, friendly people, and one of the world's most iconic natural wonders the Grand Canyon. Take two weeks this summer to explore the wonders of the world that exist right in your own backyard and give back to the community through fun service! You will learn about the ancient and modern cultures in this region and see how people have used this land to their advantage over the years. A home for Native Americans for centuries, a fearsome barrier to the West for American frontiersmen, and a place of inspiration for countless artists, writers and naturalists, the mountains and deserts of Northern Arizona are simply stunning.

    Food and Fun
Starting in Phoenix you will drive south, stopping at local farms and restaurants along the way for a taste of the unique culinary repertoire locals have developed in this arid region. Try some fun desert specialties (including cacti, chilies, and desert fruits) and learn about the farming and gathering techniques that helped sustain people for thousands of years before modern agriculture. Then head up north to a fun, young city Flagstaff: a mix of the Wild West and the international influence, and the gateway to the Canyon.

    Desert Service
Teach kids about proper nutrition using fun games and interactive lessons and inspire them to make healthy food choices throughout their lives. Pitch in growing food in urban and desert farms and learning how to take advantage of the resources the desert offers, to create healthy eating options for the people of the region. You will make tons of new friends as you show them how to work in the gardens and prepare healthy meals. You may even learn a thing or two about where your own food comes from!

    The Grand Canyon
As the week comes to an end you will spend a day exploring the beautiful South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Marvel at the long stretches of desert flying by as you head towards one of America's most breathtaking landmarks. Get on a bike and tour around the rim of the canyon, looking down at the Colorado River which carved this gorge millions of years ago. The bike ride is about five miles just long enough to get your blood pumping and to get away from the bustling tourist center and into the grand landscape the region is famous for.

    Who Should Come?
