APU welcomes those interested in studying Japanese during the summer to participate in the Summer APU Gateway Program in June and July. If you would like to immerse yourself in Japan for a longer period, you have the option of studying at APU for either one semester or one year under our Study Abroad Program.
The Summer APU Gateway Program offers intensive beginner's to intermediate Japanese language courses, designed to meet the varying language proficiency levels of the participants, with tutorials from both experienced instructors and from APU Japanese students. You will also have the opportunity of joining APU's Japanese and international students by taking academic courses in English from the College of Asia Pacific Studies and the College of International Management. Organized field trips to local sites, an overnight trip to Nagasaki, and a weekend homestay will allow you to experience Japan first hand!
Study abroad students who come for one semester or one year may choose courses taught in English from either the college of Asia Pacific Studies (APS) or International Management (APM). Students also have the option of studying Japanese at their own level. Those with a proficient level of Japanese may even take specialized Japanese subjects such as Business Japanese, Consecutive Interpretation, or Teaching Japanese as a Second Language.
All Study Abroad students are guaranteed a place in AP House, our on-campus halls of residence. Rooms are well equipped with refrigerator, air conditioning, private washroom, bedding and telephone.
Begin your exploration of Japan by coming to Beppu, home to the world's second largest outflow of Hot Springs (onsen) and some of the most spectacular natural scenery and old-style Japanese architecture. This is a perfect place for those who want to learn more about Japanese society, culture and language. Participating in the 8 week Summer Quarter Program and the semester/year Study Abroad programs will allow you to join APU's Japanese and international students from all over the world.
