A project of the US non-profit 501(c)3, the San Francisco Filipino Cultural Center. Returning Wave empowers young people by partnering with communities and schools at the locations we surf in. We create after-school surfing programs that keep children in school by offering the incentive of free surfing lessons and access to surfboards. Our aim is to travel responsibly as surfers and as tourists by giving back to the communities we visit. We do this by shipping recycled surfboards, surfing with the local children and teaching workshops in the arts and trades.
Returning Wave works in partnership with ALS (Alternative Learning System): a Philippine government subsidized program that helps students of all ages to re-enter school and obtain their diplomas. The students who participate in our program are from the elementary school level through early college level. Having our programs located in remote areas where surf tourism has not been overly developed is giving our participants readiness to protect their communities and environment.
