South Africa is trying to build a new future that is based around equality and opportunity for all and assisting with children's education will massively help achieve this. More than anything else the ability to read is a acting as barrier, with a division between the rich and poor’s education meaning that not everyone is being included in this new future. The project works with a child literacy initiative that aims to get children to fall in love with books and improve the reading skills of five to twelve year olds. The projects aim is to teach children the basic reading skills that will them receive a full and rewarding education.
Program Details:
Most people take the ability to read for granted, forgetting how frustrating it must be like for those that can't read books, signs the increasingly important, the internet! Many South African children do not have parents that can teach them English as they have not been taught themselves. Giving children the ability to read will help give them confidence and self esteem. For many children in South Africa they have been forced to read school books that may not interest them, which will not always be of interest to them. This is something that this project is helping to change by giving the children books they are interested in which will help motivate and inspire them to read more.
Each volunteer will be placed with children that are pre-selected by the school's head teacher, who will then sit in the library, or a quiet place outside of the classroom, and read with those children individually for half an hour at a time, twice a week with each child. You will be encouraging them by reading to them and then getting them read back to you and boosting confidence in speaking and reading English.
Your typical working hours on this project will be from Monday to Friday, 9am until 1pm, however any extra time that you can give will be greatly appreciated by the staff and children alike.
