The Volunteer Program

On this program you will have the unique opportunity to work closely with orangutans in a Malaysian Zoo for 15 days, take part in a two-day visit to a Wildlife Center to see orangutans in rehabilitation before heading to the Borneo jungle to even monitor these great apes in the wild.

Working alongside trained experts and the indigenous tribes-people of Borneo, volunteers work to conserve orangutans in both their natural environment and those living in captivity. The project aims to help the local Iban-tribes people make orangutans an integral part of the local economy through eco-tourism routes.

Highlights

The highlights of the program include:

Spend 15 days working in a Zoo in Negara working closely with primates of which orangutans are the main focus. Activities include feeding, cleaning and enriching life of primates. 2-day visit to Matang Wildlife Center with our expert staff - see orangutans in rehabilitation before being released to the wild. Learn about how the center works and understand orangutan behavior.

Travel to Batang Ai and then upriver to the Iban longhouses on the edge of the Indonesian Malaysian border where orangutans roam free and pristine rainforest still survives away from loggers and modern civilization.

Monitor the apes in the wild, deepest darkest Borneo jungle where orangutans roam free, carry out nest counts, and collect and record insects. Help local Ibans make Orangutans an integral part of the local economy through eco-tourism projects.

* All accommodation - simple, basic and with bags of character - based on dorm style with a minimum of two persons sharing.
* Food - all inclusive (as part of food allowance), apart from the occasional meals on certain traveling days, ie at airport and whilst in KL and Kuching.
