Recognized as one of the most populous countries in the world, India struggles to provide care and education to the growing number of children born into underprivileged situations making them both vulnerable members of the society and affected by issues such as malnutrition, illiteracy, abuse and neglect. The solution to development is to provide care and support in education to these children so that they can fulfill their roles as tomorrow's global citizens, as well as creating peace, social justice and equality into society.
In the urban city of Jaipur, literacy rates are relatively low and there are a high number of children, particularly girls that are in great need of education and care. This project enables volunteers such as yourself to care for and encourage the young children of Jaipur to develop their skills in education.
Volunteer Activities
This project requires help from volunteers to provide support and assistance to the children. The activities that you may be involved with include:
* Finding children who are not currently in school and prepare them for schooling, such as assisting with the Bridge Course (a course designed for slower learning children or for those children that need additional support to catch up with school work)
* Assisting with day to day care of underprivileged children (under 5years old) at special centers
* Teaching English, basic mathematics, and computer skills in required project areas
* Providing support with family visits to create awareness about the importance of education, child labor and health and safety during rag picking (an activity undertaken by a lot of poor people in Urban India who sort through rubbish to find more valuable rubbish that can be sold for recycling- this is a hazardous activity because the dumps are highly contaminated)
* Observing Infant Mortality rate, growth indicators and nutritional supplements
* Preparation of posters, paintings and other informative visual material to help with creative learning
* Coordinating various campaigns for child rights
* Organizing creative and fun activities for the children, these may include: indoor and outdoor sports activities, music and dance workshops, picnics, trips to the zoo etc.
As a volunteer, you will need to be creative in your role and bring lots of ideas to the projects. You will be required to work under your own initiative and show enthusiasm and a willingness to help in many different areas.
