The centers were set up with the hope that they may be able to prevent the re-occurrence of illegally captured, injured and abused animals. The centers are now working to their absolute limits, which is only made possible by the continuing help of enthusiastic volunteers.
Volunteer Role
The centre is committed to raising community awareness. Volunteers can get involved with school visits, to educate the local community and prevent the illegal trafficking of animals and the rights of animals, in the hope that such practices will be diminished.
During your time you'll primarily be involved in the day-to-day care of the huge variety of animals at the centre, which will involve close contact with the animals. Some of the animals you can find at the centre are: caimans, charapa turtles, aussie parakeets, parrots, tucan, coatis, kinkajous, tayras, squirrel monkeys, tamarinds, tigrillos, boas and more.
Volunteer duties will vary according to time of year and the location you choose but may include the following:
* Preparing the food for and feeding the animals/birds
* Cleaning, repairing and building animal enclosures
* Maintaining animal behavior and bird sighting databases
* Identifying plants in the tropical forest and mangrove
* Assisting with wildlife healthcare
Other more specialized duties may include getting involved in rescue missions in co-operation with the UPMA, and helping with the liberation of animals as they are returned to their natural habitat. Some volunteers may be fortunate enough to assist in the captive breeding program of the Guayaquil macaws, spider monkeys and crocodiles.
