Quinnipiac University is a coeducational, nonsectarian and private institution offering 50 areas of undergraduate study through its Schools of Business, Communications, Health Sciences, Division of Education, and the College of Liberal Arts. Quinnipiac awards graduate degrees in 17 programs in business, education, health sciences, computer information systems, accounting, health care administration, interactive media, journalism and law.
Under the leadership of John L. Lahey, eighth president of Quinnipiac, enrollment has increased by more than 100 percent within the past 15 years. In 2004-2005, 5,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate and part time students are enrolled at Quinnipiac; 95 percent of the freshman class lives on campus. More than 75% come from outside Connecticut; among them are representatives from European, Asian, Caribbean, South American and Mideastern countries. Admissions is considered competitive, with 11,000 applications for 1300 spaces in the freshman class. About 55% of those applying are offered admission.
Our academic programs are well recognized, and offer students the opportunity to participate in internships or clinical experiences, and have the use of modern technology and facilities. The Financial Technology Center in the School of Business, for example, is a high-tech simulated trading floor providing students an opportunity to access real-time financial data, conduct interactive trading simulations, and develop financial models. In the School of Communications, a new, fully digital, high-definition television production facility exceeds even the current capability of many broadcast stations in the country, and offers students training in state-of-the-art television production. Several of our health science programs offer a combined undergraduate/graduate degree such as our 6 year physician assistant BS/MS program, our Physical Therapy program is a 6 1/2 year BS/Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, Occupational Therapy is a 5 1/2 year BS/Master of Occupational Therapy program, and education offers certification at the elementary, middle or secondary level in a 5 year BA/Master of Arts in Teaching program.
Students interested in Study Abroad can apply for our Study in Ireland program which takes place during the fall and the spring semester at the Quinnipiac campus in Kerry, Ireland, or apply for one of many study abroad programs where we have placed students in the past. Or you can investigate your own specific interests. Our study abroad coordinator can be very helpful and students are advised to begin thinking about study abroad a year prior to the experience itself.
Our alumni now total more than 45,000 graduates, working and living throughout the world. Quinnipiac's 500-acre campus, situated adjacent to Sleeping Giant Mountain, offers a pleasant environment conducive to teaching and learning as well as outdoor activities. Campus facilities include a recreation center with an indoor track, aerobic studios, weight room, multi-purpose courts, and 6 outdoor tennis courts, acres of playing fields and room for cross country running. Our 21 Athletic teams compete in Division I, and our intramural teams and recreation activities offer a rewarding experience.
All students must purchase a university recommended laptop which is supported by a campus wireless network for classroom and residence hall use.
Our location halfway between New York City and Boston places us at the center of one of the Northeast's most dynamic corporate and health care corridors and we are just minutes away from the theaters, museums and concert halls of New Haven. A campus shuttle system brings students to nearby shopping, restaurants, the New Haven train station, a multi-plex cinema, office supply and book stores. International students usually enter through J.F.K. (JFK) International airport in New York and take the Connecticut limousine service to New Haven. The campus is a 15 minute taxi ride from there. One can also fly into Bradley Airport (BDL) (Hartford/Springfield) and the campus is about 30 minutes south of the airport. Freshmen are guaranteed University housing for three years, transfers for two. Seniors usually live in nearby apartments or condos in North Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, Meriden or New Haven. The Office of Residence Life helps in making students aware of area housing. International students have the services of an International Club, an International Advisor, and a one day orientation program in addition to the usual orientation days.
