  • Description

Teaching in Vietnam as a Projects Abroad volunteer will give you a new perspective on this incredible country. If you are considering a gap year, career break, or looking for a worthwhile experience while between semesters, you will have a valuable role to play teaching in one of our partner schools.

By volunteering in Vietnam you will gain invaluable teaching and classroom-based work experience. The focus is on conversational English, so you do not need any formal qualifications or TEFL training.

Since the mid-1960s Vietnam has followed an American model of education and administration. Therefore, for many years now Vietnam has recognized the increasing role of English as the language of business and the importance of adapting the education system to the rapid pace of its economy. Tourism is also growing in Vietnam and speaking English well is now essential to get a good job within the tourism or business sectors.

  • Highlights

Projects Abroad Vietnam is based in the capital city of Hanoi. There is an enormous demand to learn English among Vietnam's young population and it is taught in all secondary schools and many primary schools in the city.

Volunteers work alongside the Vietnamese teachers to help improve the students' English pronunciation. By teaching fun, inclusive lessons you can really help to develop your students' confidence. They are sure to be interested in you and your life and you can take advantage of this to get them talking to you and each other.

In most schools you will begin as a classroom assistant, supporting the teachers in their lessons. However, as you get to know the students better and start to gain confidence you may want to take on more responsibility. We also have some community-based teaching projects including work in a Buddhist Monastery.

The individual impact you have on the lives of your students will be obvious and long-lasting. At the same time you will be part of a much larger volunteer network that is making positive contributions to the wider community. It will be an experience you never forget!

  • Projects Abroad's Mission Statement

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
