Description

Ghana is a fantastic place to spend time volunteering or interning on an international medical placement in Africa. Volunteering on a Physical Therapy project in Ghana can be done as part of a college summer break, a gap year, a career-break, or during a vacation. You will gain a great deal of valuable work-experience alongside some of the most skilled doctors in the country. The facilities are generally of a decent standard, on a par with many hospitals in the west.

Whether you are a student joining us before going to a physical therapy school, or already have physical therapy knowledge and experience, the doctors in Ghana are eager for you to be involved. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn - and also to help staff with their duties - will ensure that your experience is second to none.

When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with your Projects Abroad coordinator and the internship supervisor. The hospitals provide an excellent backdrop for learning about medical practices in another country and you will see conditions that are unusual in Europe and North America.

Physical Therapy Positions in Ghana

Projects Abroad can offer Physical Therapy placements in the five regions we work in.

In Accra, our volunteers work in a large Police hospital in the neighborhood known as Danquah Circle. In Cape Coast, the Central Regional Hospital is one of the most modern hospitals in Ghana with a wide range of departments and lots of new equipment. In the Akuapem Hills, the Koforidua Regional hospital is a large state run facility. The Kumasi South hospital - which sits between the three cities of Atonsu, Agogo and Chirapatre - is a very important hospital that serves a local population of over 400,000. And in Ho, we work with both the municipal and regional hospital as well as a local polyclinic. These are busy medical centers that attend to the population of the Ho region.

Highlights

Living in vibrant, colorful Ghana will feel like an explosion, an enchanting sensory overload. Music is a central part of Ghanaian culture, so in the bigger towns - especially Accra - you will hear some great live bands and have some memorable nights out.

There are many, many attractions and places to visit. You will want to see the slave forts and spend a night in the rainforest at Kakum Rainforest Reserve, feed wild monkeys at The Boebeng Monkey Village or elephant watch at Mole National Park. If you're even more adventurous, consider the challenge of a journey to Timbuktu.

Travel across Ghana is cheap and easy, whether it be in a taxi, a tro-tro (a sort of minibus) or on a lake boat. There are clean, affordable places to stay and eat in all the main towns.

Ghana is a superb location for bird watching and is developing a good ecotourism philosophy. It's also an interesting place for history lovers and, once your overseas voluntary work is over, it's a great stepping-off point from which to explore West Africa.
