Our Music project in Brazil is a community-based volunteer project that allows local children, teenagers, and adults to develop awareness and appreciation of music. Through taking part on this project, not only will you be improving the students' knowledge of music, but you will also gain insight into the heart of Brazilian music and culture.
The Music project is based in Niteroi, Projects Abroad's main base in Brazil. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, dedicated individuals who specialize in music education or who can teach the children at least one instrument.
Teaching Music in Brazil with Projects Abroad
Projects Abroad works with Espaco Cultural da Grota, a center that teaches over 200 students from 10-25 years old. Volunteers can teach students to improve their skills on percussion and string instruments and also the piano. Your time will be spent either giving one-on-one support to pupils, or teaching small groups of students. Volunteers should be enthusiastic about music and able to inspire the students to develop both theoretical and practical musical knowledge and skills.
Your role as a music volunteer is to teach students how to play the instruments, how to improvise melodies and how to compose and arrange music within specified guidelines. You will also teach the students how to read and notate music and help the children to listen, analyze, and describe a wide variety of musical pieces.
Volunteers are encouraged to help the students understand the relationship between music and the other arts, and develop workshops focusing on different types of music. Music education can play a vital role in a child's development and increasing their exposure to music and exploring their emotions and feelings about certain types of music can engage some children where other subjects fail.
Our Music project can be combined with our Teaching or Care projects, depending on your interest and expertise.

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
