Volunteering on a Medicine and Healthcare project in Brazil is an exciting experience. As a Medicine and Healthcare volunteer, you will gain a large amount of valuable work experience alongside some extremely skilled and talented doctors. Volunteers will find that the facilities in the hospitals are generally of a high standard and comparable to hospitals in the west.
Our volunteers work in large hospitals in the city of Niteroi. Volunteers have the opportunity to shadow doctors in a number of different departments. On arrival you will be introduced to your supervisor, whose role is to ensure that you have the opportunity to learn as much as possible during your placement.
Doctors and nurses welcome volunteers with a range of experience as long as you are enthusiastic and keen to participate. Through showing initiative and building a good rapport with your colleagues, you can get very involved with the doctors and patients with whom you are working.
Volunteer Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy in Brazil
Projects Abroad offers voluntary placements in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy to volunteers who have some experience or qualifications in these areas.
Volunteers work with a variety of adults and children. This placement offers you a fantastic opportunity to gain in depth knowledge regarding how local procedures and patient support are comparable to your past experiences in these areas.
Specific treatments used at our physical therapy placement include respiratory physical therapy, postural re-education, acupuncture and pre-natal services. Psychomotricity activities, reading techniques and vocabulary stimulations are some of the treatments offered to patients for Speech Therapy.
Brazil has so many great attractions that it is difficult to know where to start. In the city of Rio de Janeiro alone there are a thousand different ways to entertain yourself and you will probably choose to spend your weekends here. In addition to the sights mentioned above, Rio is also home to one of the largest sports stadiums in the world, the Maracana. Whether you are a soccer fan or not, catching the atmosphere at a live game will be an unforgettable experience! The city also contains the world's largest urban forest; at 32 square kilometers the Tijuca Forest is a designated National Park, containing all manner of rare species.
Further away you can experience the beautiful beaches of Fernando de Noronha, the lively atmosphere of Salvadore and the raw power of the Iguazu Falls. No trip to Brazil would be complete without a trip to the Amazon, and you can use Brazil as a gateway to just about every other South American country.
All accommodation is organized, paid for and monitored by Projects Abroad. All project placements are regularly visited and checked. We require high standards of supervision and accommodation, which are verified before you arrive in Brazil.
This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.
It is recommended that volunteers interested in these placements can speak a basic level of Portuguese, or are fluent in Spanish. This will enable greater interaction and communication with both the staff and the patients.

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.

I had a fantastic time with Projects Abroad. The staff were extremely welcoming, meeting me at the airport, introducing me to my host family, and taking me on a "test run" of how to get to and from...
