Location
Bolivia: Cochabamba

Program Duration
1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months (includes high school academic semester abroad)

  • Description

It is possible to take a Quechua Language course in either Bolivia or Peru. Through Projects Abroad you have the opportunity to do an intensive two-week or month-long Quechua Language Project, taught by a local teacher. Quechua is the native South-American language spoken primarily by the indigenous people living in the Andes.

The courses are taught one-on-one and the pace will be tailored to suit your abilities and needs. A good understanding of Quechua will enable you to make the most of your time in Bolivia or Peru and really engage with the local people.

Alternatively you can undertake a shorter 14-hour or 30-hour course in Quechua which runs alongside your main volunteer project. If you are planning to spend at least three months in Bolivia or Peru you can also choose to take a 60-hour course that will run alongside your main project. For more information please visit our Language Plus placements.

  • Highlights

Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating Bolivian culture on one of our intensive Quechua Language projects. Quechua is the official language in Bolivia but Spanish has a heavy influence on this local language.

You can learn Quechua through Projects Abroad on an intensive two-week or month-long Language Project, where you will receive an average of 15 hours tuition each week. With accommodation in the home of a local family, you'll learn quickly and can practice what you've learned with your hosts each day. Lessons are with a qualified language teacher, are tailored to your personal level, and can be adapted to your interests.

After your lessons you will, of course, have plenty of time to complete your homework and explore Cochabamba with other volunteers.

Projects Abroad also offers other projects in Bolivia such as Journalism, Medicine, and Teaching. By starting your time in Bolivia on a Quechua Language Project you will certainly benefit if you then choose to continue on another volunteer project. This would then allow you to put your new language skills to use in a practical work setting.

Quechua Language Courses are also Available in Peru

Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating Peruvian culture on one of our intensive Quechua Language projects. Quechua is an official language in Peru where Quechua and Spanish are now heavily intermixed, with many hundreds of Spanish cognates in Quechua.

You can learn Quechua in Peru through Projects Abroad on an intensive two-week or month-long Language Project, where you will receive an average of 15 hours tuition each week. With accommodation in the stunning Sacred Valley in the home of a local family, you'll learn quickly and can practice what you've learned with your hosts each day. Lessons are with a qualified language teacher, are tailored to your personal level, and can be adapted to your interests.

After your lessons you will have plenty of time to complete your homework and explore the Sacred Valley with other volunteers. Please note that the Language Courses in Peru cannot be combined with the Conservation Project.

Projects Abroad offers many other projects in Peru including Care, Medicine, and Sports. Spending some time studying Quechua would be very useful if you then choose to continue on another volunteer project. You could put your new language skills to use in a real work environment and interact more with your local colleagues.

  • Projects Abroad's Mission Statement

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
