China: Chengdu, Shanghai
Program Duration
1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months (includes high school academic semester abroad)
Projects Abroad offers Mandarin language courses in both Shanghai and Chengdu. Though English is widely spoken in both cities, by learning Mandarin you'll be able to further immerse yourself in the fascinating Chinese culture. Making an effort to speak the basics in Mandarin will be greatly appreciated by your colleagues.
You can learn Mandarin through Projects Abroad on an intensive two-week or month-long Language Project, where you will receive an average of 15 hours of class time each week. Lessons will take place at a local language center with a qualified language teacher. The lessons are tailored to your personal level and can be adapted based on your interests.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have been learning Mandarin for many years, being immersed in the language every day will help your skills progress quickly.
After your lessons you will, of course, have plenty of time to complete your homework and explore the city to practice what you have learned.
Alternatively you can undertake a short, 14-hour or 30-hour language course in Mandarin. This course is tailored to your needs and runs alongside your volunteer placement or internship. If you are planning on volunteering or interning abroad for three months or more, you could also complete a 60-hour course alongside your placement. As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
