Morocco is a safe and moderate North African country that offers a fascinating first taste of the continent. It also gives you the ideal opportunity to learn more about Arabic and Islamic influences.
One of the best ways to develop greater knowledge of Islamic culture is to learn Arabic. You can do this through Projects Abroad on an intensive, two-week or month long Language Project where you will receive 15 hours of tuition each week.
Alternatively, you can undertake a short, 14-hour or 30-hour course in Arabic that is scheduled alongside your main international volunteering experience. If you are in the country for at least three months, you could also complete a 60-hour language course in conjunction with your time volunteering abroad.
Rabat provides a cosmopolitan setting in which to improve your French. Although Arabic is the official language in Morocco, Rabat's focus on politics and business means that French is culturally very important here and if you don't know much Arabic, will be the main language that you can use to communicate.
You will receive 60 hours of personal classes per month and be accommodated with a French speaking local family. Using the language every day and with plenty of access to Francophone culture through libraries, cinemas and music, your skills will rapidly improve.
After your month long French Language course, you could choose to spend time working on a Teaching or Care project in Morocco, giving you more opportunities to practice and improve your language skills.
While taking part in the Arabic Language Project, you'll be living in Rabat, an ancient but cosmopolitan city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Rabat is the political and business capital of the country. Arabic is the official language of Morocco, thus widely spoken.
A qualified language tutor runs the Arabic classes with the pace carefully tailored to suit your needs. Depending on when you arrive, the classes may be private lessons or you may be in a small group with two or three other volunteers. You will be living with an Arabic speaking Moroccan host family who will encourage you to practice the language at home while you experience their culture, community and customs.
After completing your Language Course, you could then choose to volunteer on a Teaching or Care project in Morocco and put your newly acquired Arabic language skills to use in a practical international working environment.

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
