  • Description

Our journalism internship working on the monthly Madurai Messenger is open to anyone, from gap year students to highly experienced journalists.

On this Print Journalism internship you will get the chance to put together an impressive portfolio of work, which will enhance your resume and give you some fantastic international work experience - greatly increasing your prospects within the highly competitive journalism industry.

You will also be able to gain an insight into all the different areas of production that a magazine has to go through, from the early planning stages all the way through to distribution.

On this internship, your input is always encouraged and appreciated, and an adaptable can-do approach will make you very popular with your colleagues.

Formerly known as The Sivakasi Times, The Madurai Messenger was set up in 2002 by Projects Abroad in collaboration with the local business community. This is the first ever English language magazine produced in the Madurai area. It is sent free to schools and other institutions and is also available online.

The Madurai Messenger is run by interns along with our local staff who have experience working as journalists throughout the South of India. This means that interns with no experience can be involved in the entire process: from writing, researching, editing, photography and layouts all the way to the final printing stage. On the other hand, interns with a host of experience can bring their specialized knowledge and assistance to the magazine and even act as mentors for the less experienced.

Each magazine has its own theme. In the past it has ranged from environmental issues such as water supply and environmental controversies to women's issues and sports. Interns are involved from the first planning meetings about what to include in the month's issue to helping get the finished copies to local distributors.

The Madurai Messenger gives interns a real opportunity to get involved at a magazine; whether you are interviewing local politicians or seeking opinions on the latest Indian cricket debate, you will be an integral part of the time. You may travel to meet a local farmer who is upset by a government decision or sit in on an editorial board to decide what will be included this month. Thanks to our interns the magazine contains a diverse range of articles and reports which makes it a popular and entertaining read.

  • Projects Abroad's Mission Statement

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
