  • Description

If you are interested in learning more about the amazing history of the Inca civilization, this project is for you. You will be placed in the Inca's Sacred Valley of Peru to help with our archaeological digs, and restoration projects and community work, surrounded by the stunning landscape of the Andes. Your trip will begin with an introduction to the history of the Inca Empire. You will then be taken to the small Andean hamlet of Huyro, where you will work with our local archaeological experts.

We work with the Peruvian Historical Institute helping to uncover and reconstruct Inca terraces and buildings in an area only recently discovered as a new Inca settlement. You will also be involved in various community projects to revitalize local schools in and around Huyro. You will live in a shared volunteer house with our local staff. Volunteers are also responsible for caring for the house and garden.

You will be taken to see many of the archaeological wonders of Peru including the magnificent Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo where the Inca fought their last battle with the Conquistadores. You will also have a chance to visit the markets of traditional Peruvian towns and explore the ancient Inca capital of Cusco.

  • Highlights

Peru is a country of contrasts, a place of extremes: desert and jungle, snow-peaks and sand dunes, great wealth and grinding poverty.

For your accommodation, you will live in a community house close to the center of Huyro with a family of Projects Abroad staff that will cook and look after you. Volunteers are very much part of the Huyro community.

  • Projects Abroad's Mission Statement

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
