Mongolia is a fascinating country, and a wonderful place to spend time as a volunteer coach in local schools. Physical strength is a high priority in sports in Mongolia, with the most popular sports being wrestling, horse riding and archery. However, a number of other sports are starting to catch on due to a tide of Western influence that has been affecting the country ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The younger generation is beginning to get interested in soccer, basketball and volleyball but the schools we work with are often very poor and cannot afford the necessary equipment for children to participate in these sports on a regular basis. Even when they can, the standard of teaching is poor, because the teachers have simply not had the required sports background.
Projects Abroad is based in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. During the school year there are many opportunities to get involved with coaching a variety of sports. If you specialize in a particular sport and have a good knowledge of the game and how to coach it effectively then you will be much in demand, but the schools we work with are also very happy to have coaches with a simple love of sports in general, and the enthusiasm to develop the same in the others.
During the summer months you can work at a summer camp, situated just outside the capital city. Here volunteers can help coaching soccer, ping pong, volleyball or basketball - the list of sports is endless. Just let us know what sport you are interested in and we can find a suitable placement.
You can volunteer as a Sports Coach as part of a college summer break, gap year, during a career break or as part of an alternative vacation; everybody is welcome! And you do not have to have previous experience. Anyone with a passion for sports can participate.
The majority of Mongolians have limited opportunities to take part in sports in their recreation time, so you can play a vital role in providing a platform for them to participate. Tasks may range from fitness training, helping referee games, developing coaching programs and skills work.
This project offers you a real chance to use your sports talent while interacting with Mongolian teachers and students, and also to play a role in the local community. Your efforts are sure to be greatly appreciated and you will find the development you see in your students to be incredibly rewarding.
You can join a school sports project in Mongolia for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period. Volunteers who can only join us for two weeks may be paired up with another longer term sports volunteer.

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
