Based in many small towns along the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, south of Colombo, and in the mountain top hill station town of Kandy - care work in Sri Lanka is a multi-faceted experience offering an enormous variety of projects. All the work, however, has one basic requirement in common: a love of working with children.
You will work with your fellow volunteers in orphanages and day care centers helping the children there learn the alphabet and engage in art activities. In the afternoons volunteers assist in numerous areas with the children, from helping with homework to organizing and playing sports and games, or reading to a child individually.
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit a Tsunami affected area. Work in these areas has been ongoing since the Tsunami hit in 2004, and thankfully most of the affected families have been re-housed. However a lot of work is still needed to regenerate local communities and provide extra educational support to the children affected by this tragedy, many of whose schools were closed for months after the event. Visiting these placements will give you a great chance to continue the good work done by our past volunteers. You might be helping with basic conversational English lessons or organizing a sports day that all the children from the local communities can be involved in.
Depending on the weather during the weekend, we will either take you water rafting, canyoning or to one of the many beaches in the region for watersports.

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
