Since the democratic revolution of 1990, Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar, has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Central Asia. Ulaanbaatar now has many opportunities for business growth.
The country's major industries include mining, agriculture and cashmere. China, Russia, the US and Canada are some of Mongolia's major trading partners. Many world famous corporations are doing business in Mongolia and more than 70 countries having already invested in the country. As well as planning to increase its economic trade with neighboring countries, Mongolia is also eager to boost its tourist industry.
There are opportunities for those who wish to work within the areas of business administration, management, new tourism, catering and service sectors. For interns who are on a gap year, students studying a related subject in college, or those looking for employment in a particular sector, our business internships in Mongolia offer you an invaluable opportunity to gain work experience that will increase your prospects in a highly competitive job market.
We have business internships for you in business administration and management as well as with a wide range of manufacturing and service companies such as tourism. Imports account for around 90 percent of Mongolia's consumer spending and as a result trading companies dominate the economy. Hotels and even Mongolian Airlines are happy to take on interns.
If you have an interest in a different area of business please let us know and, provided we have been given enough notice, we will work hard to find an internship to suit your requirements. Please contact us for more information.
An internship in the business sector could involve you working with a director or general manager of a small or medium sized company, often handling cross-border contracts with Russian and Chinese clients. Hotels, publishers and various other industries are also happy to host interns.
Throughout your internship, interns are expected to be punctual and professional and required to work normal office hours. When you arrive at work on your first day, you will be assigned a supervisor who will be able to advise and support you during your internship. Of course Projects Abroad staff are always on hand too in case you have any questions.
The work you do will depend on the internship, but be prepared for a challenge! You will get involved with the day-to-day activities around the office whether they are contacting different clients, working with business support teams, researching for current or future projects, putting together portfolios, attending meetings or working on set briefs.
For your colleagues, exposure to an English language speaker is highly valuable and will enable them to advance their own language skills.Your fellow staff members will often have good levels of English but will be eager to learn more! You might find yourself teaching a few informal bits of English at times or proofreading texts -- you will probably find yourself receiving dinner invitations too!
Whichever business internship you're working at, your input will be greatly encouraged and appreciated. Take the opportunity to make your own suggestions, explain about how things work back home or learn some of the language! Your adaptability and willingness to learn will be greatly appreciated.

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
