Volunteer in Sri Lanka

Location

Sri Lanka: Ambalangoda

Description

Known as the teardrop of India, Sri Lanka is a relatively small island packed with cultural and natural beauty. It is a country you will instantly feel at home in and one you will find hard to leave.

Sri Lanka has had it tough in recent years. Conflict in the north east of the island between the Sri Lankan army and Tamil Tigers has had an unsettling effect. In addition, the Tsunami in 2004 took the lives of around 35,000 and destroyed large parts of the coastal region. Yet despite all the hardship faced, the Sri Lankan people remain upbeat and continue smiling.

PMGY supports projects in Ambalangoda, a town located on the south west coast of Sri Lanka – about 20 miles north of Galle. Ambalangoda is the perfect place to volunteer – a peaceful, safe and traditional community that welcomes volunteers. It also boasts an incredible coastline!

This is your chance to experience the ‘real’ Sri Lanka – working alongside the local people and helping towards community development. Our volunteers get involved in a range of projects from medical internships, teaching to Buddhist monks, caring for orphaned children, to sea turtle conservation. If you are not sure which project suits you best then don’t worry – our volunteers can join in multiple projects during their time with us. All volunteers live together in a Volunteer House. This provides the perfect social setting for you to meet new people and make friends for life.

Although you’ll be living in an authentic Sri Lankan community, the more lively towns of Bentota, Galle and Hikkaduwa are only a short bus or train ride away. We also organize a number of weekend tours around the country that you can join in.

Sri Lanka is the place to be. Worthwhile projects, good weather all year-round, amazing coastlines and some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. What more could you want?! Make a positive impact with PMGY and have some adventures that will live long in your memory.
