Volunteer in Peru
Description
Peru is a country that requires no introduction. It’s historic significance as the birthplace of Inca civilization and diverse array of breathtaking scenery, make Peru one of the most enchanting places on earth.
From beaches and deserts to the Andes Mountains and tropical jungle surrounding the mighty Amazon River, Peru provides visitors with a range of experiences. Some of the must-sees include Machu Picchu, the winding Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon, the sand dunes of Huacachina, and the Nazca lines. The people of Peru add to the beauty and diversity of this wonderful nation. However, by volunteering with PMGY in Peru you are becoming more than just an average tourist.
Despite a stable economy, the number of Peruvians living in poverty has increased in recent years. It is estimated that 20% of the population survive on less than $3 a day – the majority who are indigenous people. There is also clear economic disparity – the richest 10% of Peru’s population earn around 50 times more than the poorest 10%.
We place volunteers in Cusco. Our volunteers work in communities on the outskirts of the city, where there is a genuine need for outside assistance. PMGY volunteers help to educate, to reach out to marginalized groups, and to support underfunded organizations that provide essential community services.
During your free time you’ll have every opportunity to travel and explore Peru. We also offer Spanish lessons for volunteers looking to improve their Spanish during their time on the program.
