When it comes to moving half a world away in order to attend college, Evelyn Yambay can sum it up with the clarity and emotion that only comes from experiencing it firsthand.
"Trying anything new is hard," said the 20-year-old biochemistry major from Paraguay. "It was a hard decision to come here, because I didn't want to leave my family. I was afraid because I was coming by myself. But I've gotten to know other people, and now I'm glad I'm here."
With students from all parts of the world looking for opportunities to study in the United States, Pittsburg State University and its idyllic Midwest location is an attractive option for families. This fall, nearly 500 international students from 40 different countries are enrolled. While many of the 180 new faces this year are graduate students working on degrees in business, human resource management, or are here to improve their English language skills, others are exploring majors they wouldn't have the chance to study in their home countries.
