Description

The beaches of Barra de Parismina are home to a variety of endangered Sea Turtles. This tiny village, located along the Tortuguero canals can only be reached by boat and is home to 400 villagers. Homestay opportunities are a wonderful to become a part of this tiny community. The Parismina Turtle Commission seeks volunteers to help patrol the beaches at night to save the nesting sea turtles from poachers. A variety of other opportunities including teaching English lessons are available.

A variety of eco-tourism experiences including boat tours to see monkeys, sloths, crocodiles and a multitude of birds. Bats, frogs, snakes and the elusive pacca may be seen. Fishing in the canals and off the shore allow anglers to catch record breaking tarpon and snook.

Qualifications

Parismina is a remote village, so it is best for volunteers to be in good physical condition. A desire to to learn through travel is more important than a formal background in conservation work. A variety of opportunities are available; long term volunteers with backgrounds in conservation biology are especially welcome.

Beach patrols can be very strenuous, so the ability to walk long distances on sand at night is important for volunteers interested in beach patrol. Other opportunities may be available for volunteers looking for a less strenuous project.

Cost in US$:

All volunteers must pay a USD 30 registration fee. Thereafter, a modest daily fee will cover your food, lodging and basic expenses while in Parismina. Beach patrol, a private room, 3 meals a day, laundry service are available as a homestay package which costs USD 20 per day. If you stay longer than two weeks, the rate drops to USD 15 per day. The best experiences can be had if you have at least a week to commit. Opportunities are also available for those who have only a few days to spend in Parismina.

Typical Volunteer

Volunteers may come to Parismina to work with the sea turtle conservation project and hatchery. Duties typically include beach patrols, measuring and checking tags of the nesting sea turtles and work at the hatchery. Homestays can be arranged with local families. Other volunteer projects, such as giving English classes may also be available.
