Originally a Stone Age settlement and then transportation gateway for the Kingdom of Scotland, Stirling is now a compact, pedestrian-friendly city with hundreds of stores, centuries-old theatres, two cinemas and a lively student population.

Though we can't promise Mel Gibson will be there, we'll tour the site he immortalized in the film Braveheart. Completed in 1869, the 220 feet high Wallace Monument sits prominently on the Abbey Craig two miles north of the city of Stirling itself. It was from this prominent hilltop in 1297 that William Wallace watched the English army approach across Stirling Bridge before he led the Scots into the battle victoriously.
