PAIDEIA Study Abroad Programs in Greece

Lindsay K. Hill New York, US

(Winter 2011, Rhodes)

Studying abroad in Greece was an amazing opportunity for a group of college students. We have only been on this Earth for approximately twenty years, yet the captivating structures we saw have survived since the late centuries BC. The endurance of these statues and buildings is unthinkable to our young minds; they tell such a story of the faith and interest of the Greek people, that one could spend days learning about just one figure. Although ancient entities, the religious faith is still applicable to traditional Greeks today. While Greek Orthodoxy today is quite different from the belief in the gods of Mount Olympus, the enthusiasm of religion is just as fervent.

Greece Study Abroad (Winter Paideia 2011)

Hearing the word 'paideia' did not have much influence on me before December 27th, 2010. When I first applied to study abroad for the Paideia program, I wasn't even sure what it meant. The intent for my trip was to take advantage of the opportunity to go abroad before I graduate from UConn this spring. There was nothing in particular about Greece that made me want to go on the trip. The decision really came down to choosing between Greece and London as they were the only two winter programs offered. When I looked into both programs I chose Greece (mostly because it was the cheaper of the two). I applied for the Paideia program. After my three weeks in Greece, I will never hear Paideia again without being flooded with the greatest memories of my life so far. I now know that the word paideia in Greek could have many different meanings. It could mean child, student, and to educate. Beyond its concrete meaning, it could have a bit of an abstract meaning-encompassing the general idea of education and everything that falls in line. After my study abroad trip, I'll forever associate the word paideia with love. Love of culture. Love for my friends. Love of history, and ultimately a love for life. Before the trip I expected to have a good time being outside the United States for the first time and being fully immersed in a culture other than my own. However, I was not quite prepared for the impression the trip would ultimately leave on me. It was the time of my life.

My experience in Greece completely changed my life. Through my time there, I was able to truly enjoy the Greek culture, cuisine, and language. I saw and experienced more things than I could have possibly imagined in my lifetime. I made friendships there that will last a lifetime, both with students from the States, and native Greeks whom I befriended. I highly suggest this program to anyone that is interested in studying abroad.
