From its beginnings, Pacifica has placed a strong emphasis on depth psychology. Based on the work of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, depth psychology calls attention to the importance of what lies below the surface of conscious awareness. Students come from all over the world to pursue graduate degrees at Pacifica, either through three or four-day monthly learning sessions, or in a blended distance-learning and low residency format. More than 3,000 Pacifica alumni incorporate the vision of depth psychology into their lives and vocations. Above all, Pacifica offers a sense of community to those who seek a life that looks beyond daily concerns to consider soul and spirit. Students often say the most valuable part of their association with Pacifica is the sense that they have found a place where their inner lives matter, where their chosen paths to self-knowledge are honored and encouraged.

Both of Pacifica's campuses are located in the coastal California foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, approximately 90 miles north of Los Angeles, and eight miles south of Santa Barbara. These two quiet and beautifully landscaped campuses offer ideal settings for contemplation and study. In forming the setting for its campuses, Pacifica has taken special care of the land. The plantings and structures have been designed to blend in with and give back to the environment. The gardens and "people paths" are arranged in such a way as to invite the birds, insects, and other animals of the area to make their homes in these places. Existing orchards have been converted to organic production. By growing fresh fruits, herbs, and vegetables on campus, Pacifica moves toward its goal of environmental sustainability.

The mission of Pacifica Graduate Institute is to foster creative learning and research in the fields of psychology and mythological studies, framed in the traditions of depth psychology. By creating an educational environment with a spirit of free and open inquiry, consistent with the recognized values of academic freedom, Pacifica is dedicated to cultivating and harvesting the gifts of the human imagination. So that these insights may influence the personal, cultural, and planetary concerns of our era, this dedication is contained in the motto: animae mundi colendae gratia - for the sake of tending soul in and of the world.
