  • Description

    Aid, Educate, Empower
Affordable Volunteer work & gap year travel in Africa!
We offer volunteer work & gap year travel in Africa with a focus on community arts and rural development projects.

    Next stop is Ghana!

Nka Foundation, a nonprofit arts organization, is looking for volunteers from a wide-range of backgrounds and experiences. Individual or team volunteers are all welcome. Typically, volunteers work and share the same house with other participants. The sharing of everyday life, with the local community and the international volunteers, is a valuable process of gaining cross-cultural awareness, and of becoming a global citizen.

It's time for action! Come! Let's us contribute to a real need and empower choices for those who say they are economically underprivileged despite the abundance of local resources. You can volunteer or intern at our Arts Village site, a local school, village centre, or work with community groups on your project or a humanitarian activity that aim at building cultural bridges between Africa and the rest of the world. In our Arts Village, some participants create works of art; others design-and-build artistic houses by maximum use of earth and other materials from the environment. The weekends can be used for cultural excursions, expeditions to the national parks, or attend community events such as weddings, funerals, and festivals. Or, it can be devoted to workshops in drumming, dancing, cooking.

  • Highlights

Join us! Cost of food and accommodation is affordable. Food is by cooperative kitchen in which we all work together in sharing the planning, cost, shopping and cooking; the estimate is USD7-9/day. Our cook preparers most of the meals; on rotating basis residents are required to volunteer at the kitchen to prepare a dinner of own national dish. It has been more of a dinner party, a time to come together to sample national cuisines, have fun at the table and bond as a community. Volunteer pays USD 90 / Euro 71 / GBP 62 per week for accommodation. The international volunteers are responsible for own return air ticket, and other personal costs. If proposing / initiating a project, you will have to raise the funds for that.

    Online Volunteers
If you are unable to come in person and have fundraising skills/ experience, you can pitch in as Online volunteer. That is, most of the communication will be via e-mail or possibly skype and perhaps a phone call, if needed. You will help us to spread word of our project to your local media/online forums, churches, philanthropies, organizations and businesses as to support our project.

  • Nka Foundation 's Mission Statement

Nka Foundation is an idea just as much as a non-profit organization. It is an artist initiative founded in 2005 with focus on human capital development through use of the arts at the intersections of life-long education, multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations. The foundation defines the arts broadly to include visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, design, new media/film production, arts history, arts criticism, arts education, arts administration and curatorships, and emerging others. Its successful projects involve arts symposium series, and concept arts village project. Nka Foundation continues to foster cross-cultural synergy for tapping local resources for sustainable development through community arts practice and infrastructure especially in rural communities in the Anglophone, Lusophone and Francophone African settings.
