NYU Madrid, founded in 1958, is NYU's oldest global academic center. Over 6,000 undergraduate students from universities and colleges throughout the United States have studied Spanish language, literature, culture, art, anthropology, politics, and cinema at NYU Madrid. NYU faculty and Spanish university professors who are recognized experts in their fields teach both language and subject courses. Students of all language levels find courses suited to their needs. Those with no previous knowledge of the language take elementary-level courses and subject courses taught in English, or they may enroll in the Fast Track Spanish for Beginners Program to raise their proficiency levels rapidly in just one semester. Students who are fluent in Spanish take all of their courses in Spanish at the NYU center or during the spring semester only, they may take up to two courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM).
NYU Madrid students enjoy a full range of cultural activities, seminars, and excursions designed to engage them with Spanish culture. Students studying in Madrid explore a capital that is intricately linked to the literature, civilization, and culture courses in which they are enrolled. Experts in history, art, and architecture lead class excursions, and a full-time staff plans trips in and around Madrid. Famous for its nightlife and beauty, Madrid offers all the conveniences of a capital city - gyms, cinemas, theatre and dance performances, concerts, galleries, and museums. In past semesters, students traveled overnight to Barcelona, Andalusia, Ávila, the Basque Country, and Galicia and took day trips to nearby Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca, and the famous El Corral Renaissance theatre in Almagro.
