  • Description

At NYU Accra, students experience firsthand the diversity and complexity of West Africa. The academic center in Ghana is unique among our locations because students take courses at the NYU center and may also enroll in one to two courses at a local university, University of Ghana-Legon, for part of their course work. Students study with NYU professors, and with Ghanaian scholars who teach at the NYU academic center and at the University of Ghana-Legon.

Subject areas at NYU Accra mostly focus on film, linguistics, studio art, literature, and culture; journalism, communications, and the media; the social sciences; and history. Widely recognized as one of the top institutions of higher education in West Africa, the University of Ghana-Legon is the country's flagship university. Hundreds of courses and a full range of academic programs are available, with particular strengths in Africana studies, the social sciences, and the performing arts.

  • Highlights

The curriculum at NYU Accra fosters academic and personal growth by using the city as a classroom. Within Accra, students take part in the rich local culture by visiting the national theatre, various museums, and historical landmarks. Students have the opportunity to participate in cocurricular programming, including volunteer and community service opportunities at a number of organizations, including Amnesty International, the Ark Foundation, the National Museum, the National Theatre, and the West Africa AIDS Foundation. Trips outside of Accra may include Cape Coast and Elmina, former centers of the slave trade, now World Heritage Sites; Kumasi, the center of Ashanti history; the Volta River; Mole National Park; and Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary.
