Description

New Choice has funded the Day Care Center to remove young women and girls in Ulaanbaatar from prostitution, poor families and homeless and provide them with rehabilitation and better life alternatives.

Starting in March, 2006, the objectives have been to develop networks, provision of training, identify and access the target group and to find the natural parents of the children where possible.

There are currently 22 young women between 15 to 17 years involved in the program of a final target of 70 girls. 90% of the group are school drop outs and a high number have very low literacy levels. Medical care has been provided to the girls by the Childrens hospital, with some of the girls continuing to receive treatment. Some of the girls have recently been placed at home.

The program commenced with a camp during summer to provide an opportunity for staff and participants to get to know each other. It also provided time-out and access to counseling for the girls in a safe and friendly environment. Counseling continues to be provided by the volunteer-students of Psychological Department of the Humanity University, either to individuals or to small groups. 16 girls are accessing non-formal education activities, which include English Language, History and Astronomy.

Case study:
My name is Oyunaa and I started to be involved in this project from the 7th March 2006. By being involved in the project I attended summer camps, participated in different sporting activities and was involved in Non-Formal Education, and provided with Psychological Counseling. I was also involved in cookery training with Austrian and American volunteers, Theresia and Elizabeth. I want to finish this project successfully and want to complete secondary school and go to study Psychology at University. Also I tried to be very active and I have had a lot of friends and my teachers and volunteerss assist me a lot. Our classmates, we wants work with foreign volunteers.

We look forward to continuing to work with foreign volunteers in 2011.

"New Choice" Mongolian Children's Charity's Mission Statement

Our charity, New Choice, was founded in 2004 by Bayarjargal D, out of deep concern for the welfare of orphans and other vulnerable children in Mongolia. Since then we have become a strong and active body of people bound together by the same concern. We are a registered non-governmental and non-profit organisation, based in the capital Ulaanbaatar. Our mission statement 'To improve the conditions of, and advance in life, impoverished and orphanaged children by 1. promoting and protecting their physical and mental well-being, and 2. furthering their education through the provision of facilities and services, with a vision or their becoming active and valued members of society'. From the outset we have been motivated by a strong wish to empower the less fortunate children of Mongolia. We believe every child has the right to good health and education, and we feel it is our responsibility to provide these. A child's potential for self-development will then naturally increase, creating a mature and responsible individual.
