  • Description

    The paid Work and Study program in England is an ideal opportunity for international students to upgrade their English language skills not only in a class-room situation but also in an everyday working environment.

    The program offers a 16-week English language course (20 hours per week) and a 16-week paid work placement. All courses work towards the Edexel work skills qualification entry level 3. All students must do this qualification during their program. This is a certificate for Personal Life Skills, Sustainable Employability Skills, Work Placement Skills and Skills for Business (please check the EDEXCEL website for more details).

    The student is assisted to find a paid placement anywhere in the UK, depending on jobs availability. This Study and Work format is known as a sandwich course (8 week-course + 16 week-placement + 8 week-course) and is recognised by British Embassies for visa purposes since March. The school has a grade A rating from the UK Border Agency to enrol international students under Tier 4 of the Points Based System.

    Location
    Language course in Brighton/Hove; work placement throughout the UK.
    We are able to arrange hotel work placements throughout the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man). We are unable to create a vacancy in a Hotel and it is vital students understand that they could be placed in any of these locations. We are only able to accept candidates who are flexible and willing to go where they are needed, mainly in the countryside or in small towns.

    * Length
    32 weeks (16 week-language course + 16 week-work placement).
    This includes a 16-week mandatory English language course (8 weeks on arrival + 8 weeks at the end) at a school in Brighton (British Council accredited school) and a 16-week paid placement in a hotel or restaurant. This format is known as a sandwich course and is recognised for visa purposes by the British Embassies. This course meets the new visa requirements for non-EU students from March.

    * Dates
    The student should arrive on a Sunday in Brighton. The program starts any Monday.

    Please note that work placements are only organized between March and December, when there are positions available. Placements cannot finish between June and September: hotels and restaurants are very busy at this period and need to hire students for the whole period. Its not possible to stop the program during this period.

    * Language Course
    A 16-week English language course (20 hours per week) is mandatory for non-EU students as a condition of being granted a Student Visa to enter the United Kingdom (50% course / 50% work placement). This course is included is the price, as well as the Edexel work skills qualification entry level 3 preparation and examination. The course is designed to improve all four linguistic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The program fee includes the exam fee.

    Students with a low level of English may be required to study on a longer course or study for a longer period at the beginning of the course, for example 14 weeks study + 16 weeks work + 2 weeks study.

    * Placement
    Our local coordinator will assist students with CV writing, interview preparation, placement, placement monitoring, administration and student support before and during the placement. Students need to be flexible and will need to pass an interview with the employer.

    Students may request a specific start date but must be prepared to be flexible as it all depends on hotel employment availability. However, every effort will be made to place students on the date requested but they must be made aware that they may have to wait for 2 or 3 weeks if necessary. Placements will be organized during the course, not before the course starts.

    Most hotel and restaurants have a dress code of a white top and black skirt or trousers. Black shoes, black tights for girls, black socks for boys. All other parts of the uniform, such as waistcoats (vests) or ties will be provided. It is recommended that the student brings its own bed linen.

    * Available Sectors
    Paid jobs are offered in the service industry, hotels, restaurants, pubs, big and small cafés, holiday camps and activity centres. Available positions are: Waiter/Waitress, Bartender, Front of House Reception, Front of House Porter, Housekeeper, Kitchen Porter, Kitchen Assistant and Commis Chef.

    * Accommodation
    Accommodation during the language course is not included in this new program.

    Accommodation with host family, student flat and hostels can be organized during the 16 week-language course (please ask for a quotation if you need it); accommodation and board are provided by the employer during the work placement; the cost may be deducted from the wage (cost £30-£60 per week). Some hotels provide board and lodging in the hotel or in nearby staff housing. Shared self-catering accommodation or a hostel is also an option. It depends on the size and location of the hotel.

    * Insurance
    Students must travel with a valid insurance for medical costs and emergency repatriation. Nacel may provide the student with such insurance (on request).

    * Work Conditions
    The student must work a minimum of 35/40 hours per week and may be expected to work either 5 or 6 days per week. He/she will earn at least the UK minimum wage: for workers aged 22 and over, £5.73 an hour (please check updated wage information). The national minimum wage is an important cornerstone of Government strategy aimed at providing employees with decent minimum standards and fairness in the workplace. It applies to nearly all workers and sets hourly rates below which pay must not be allowed to fall. It helps business by ensuring companies will be able to compete on the basis of quality of the goods and services they provide and not on low prices based predominantly on low rates of pay. The rates set are based on the recommendations of the independent Low Pay Commission.

    Deductions for accommodation, food, taxes, National Insurance and any other services supplied will be deducted from this gross wage. The timetable and conditions of employment are to be agreed upon at the time of interview between the employer and the employee. The wage offered remains at the entire discretion of the employer. If a dispute occurs on the work conditions, students should refer to the Nacels local representative in order to find an amicably solution for all parties involved.

    Students will be able to include some holiday in their course. If they take a 32 week course they can have 4 week-holiday.

    Airport pick-up and transfer remain the responsibility of the student.
