We welcome you to Mountain State University! Students come from almost every continent in the world to study at MSU. In recent years we have enrolled students from over 40 countries.
Mountain State University's main campus is located in the city of Beckley, West Virginia, in the central portion of the Southeastern United States. While it is surrounded by rural areas, Beckley is only one hour away by car from the state's capital city of Charleston and five hours from the nation's capital city of Washington, D.C.
The hospitality and safety of the community, a four-season climate, and ease of highway travel combine to make Beckley an ideal place for an international student experience.
Mountain State University's academic programs span a wide range of fields, but they're focused on preparing students for success. That means professional studies that meet current and future employment needs. It also means the skills that build both long-term career growth and personal satisfaction - since success means much more than just the work you do.
Today, it has become a dynamic four-year institution that also offers graduate programs. Mountain State University is the university of first choice for many individuals. Located at the heart of Appalachia, Beckley was in the midst of the Great Depression of 1932, when a group of local citizens, realizing that many youth were not getting the opportunity to attend an institution of higher education, conceived the idea of a junior college which would be dedicated to meeting the needs of the local community. At that time, less than 10 percent of the high school graduates of Raleigh County were attending college. The condition of the economy, the mountainous terrain, and the inadequacy of the road system made attending or commuting to any one of the three nearest colleges an overwhelming burden. The nearest colleges were located 40 to 50 miles away.
