An inspiring and impactfull two weeks

My experience in Morocco was absolutely amazing. I came as part of a school trip that focuses on social justice issues, and we partnered with MCAS to take Arabic language classes as well as two different non profit organizations; one focused on women's education and the other focused on refugee rights. First off, MCAS was such an amazing organization during our two weeks in Rabat. From the amazing hospitality, to the genuine friendships formed from with the MCAS staff, it was such a blessing to be able to work with such an organization. The Arabic classes were fantastic and allowed us to get a great foundational understanding of the language. Working with the various community partner was extremely impactful, and I thank MCAS for being the bridge that brought us together with the organizations. In addition, when doing workshops with the various populations, the MCAS staff always accompanied us and served as amazing multilingual translators. Our housing accommodation worked out perfectly, and living in the Kasbah in Rabat was beautiful. But ultimately, the kind hearted and dedicated spirit of the MCAS staff is what is going to stick with me the most and is something I value the most. They provided us with a unique culture experience which is something very special. I am so incredibly thankful to have had the opportunity to learn and immerse myself in Moroccan culture and the various social justice issues examined, and I must say MCAS was the most amazing host organization. I hope to return to Morocco soon, and I am very thankful for MCAS providing such a remarkable experience of leaning and serving in Morocco.

A Supportive and Welcoming Environment

The group that I traveled in was large, and sometimes hard to handle. At MCAS they were so helpful and accommodating I never had to worry about anyone getting left behind or left out. They organized an excellent educational program for us that allowed us to host workshops for Moroccan women and refugees. The only thing we had to worry about was workshop content, which they helped facilitate through translators because most of us could not speak Arabic/French. The translators were so charismatic and willing to participate and have fun with us, they really helped us have a powerful experience.

Life Changing Experience

Before arriving in Morocco I anticipated this program to simply offer arabic courses and interviews with various community members, but I was happily surprised that I received even more out of the program. The arabic classes every morning were extremely helpful and our fantastic teacher, Siba, made the course fun and engaging. Aside from the language immersion, Ali and Jihane were absolutely stellar in their ability to translate all of the visitors we had and their knowledge on multiple subjects. I was most impacted by the interviews MCAS set up for us because I learned peoples' stories on such an intimate level. Again, Ali and Jihane's trilingual ability made the trip so much easier than it would have been if we did not have a translator. I am so grateful for the experience and I hope to come back soon.

fantastic!

After completing the application at the MCAS website I was soon contacted by the staff. Their guidance was very helpful and it met to my expectations. It made me feel calm with taking on my English Teaching volunteer program as I have never taught English or have volunteered before.

As I arrived before the starting date and wished to stay outside the volunteer house, I arrived by myself (thus didn't use the MCAS escort service from the Rabat Airport). The orientation on the organisation and my volunteer program was very helpful, as the staff explained what I was supposed to do.

My work site was actually 10 minutes walking distance so it was quite close. On my first actual working day, I mostly tried to adapt to the role of the teacher. I worked with several volunteers (in different classes ranging from 1 to 3 volunteers) so it was much easier for all of us to get used to teaching a class of 20 people. I was in charge of 3 classes for university students and one primary class. The classes mainly consisted of teaching new vocabulary and interacting with students through games and roleplay. Some activities even took outside in the nearby park. The 4 weeks that I spent there were really fun. It's truly amazing.

My time working and living with a host family was priceless. I met a lot of friends and discovered some interesting places on the weekends. I would advise this volunteer organisation any time to any friend. I hope that whoever reads this and wants to volunteer chooses to go with MCAS. YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!

A fantastic program

Overall, my volunteering experience with MCAS in Morocco was unforgettable. I was able to meet so many people and found that I loved teaching even with all the trouble that might be linked to it.

Great Language Program

I very much enjoyed excursions to other parts of Morocco, both with my host family and with friends in the program.

FLAS required a set amount of study hours per week, and MCAS was very flexible in being able to meet these requirements.

I lived in a beautiful apartment in a very nice part of the city. Because there was already an exchange student hosted in one of the bedrooms, my sleeping situation was less than ideal. However, this did not pose a problem or negatively impact my stay, as I had access to a desk and wireless internet. The food was excellent.

Educational And Useful

My most memorable experience was exchanging ideas and knowledge with Moroccan students because this is the only way we can bridge the gap between cultures.

I chose this program because I wanted to be immersed in the culture fully, rather than just traveling to the country for a short period.

My host family were excellent in every respect, and I truly learned a lot from.

Great Language Program

I was awarded a FLAS-Title VI grant to study Arabic in Morocco, and had a very good experience with the Moroccan Centre for Arabic Studies. I had daily one-on-one tutoring with an excellent teacher of formal Arabic and Moroccan darija. The family I lived with was very kind and hospitable, and I was delighted for the opportunity to travel with them on weekends. I had no trouble with the program administration.

My experience in Morocco truly changed my life, and with the help of Ali, I learned so much. I will be going back for a longer duration to experience the culture even more and hopefully become fluent in Arabic.

Semester with MCAS

This program was wonderful! As a matter of fact I am already saving up to go back next year. Ali was very personable and was able to connect with everyone quickly. We were able to see so much of the Medina and never felt like we were left alone or lost. It was also nice to get to know Moroccan students our own age through the program. Also, for me, one of the highlights was the home stay family. Although I didn't speak Arabic and they didnt speak English they were very accommodating and the food was to die for. I actually took pictures of every meal we ate! I wish I had more time to soak everything in but I dont feel like anything was missed. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who wishes to study in the Middle East in a fun, safe, and well organized environment.

Perfect

My programme was tailor made to suit my specific needs at almost zero notice. The course took me from nothing to reading, writing and speaking basic phrases inside 2 weeks. What's more the staff helped me settle in and provided personal touches above and beyond what I could have imagined.Couldn't have asked for more, I strongly recommend this institution to anyone thinking of studying in Rabat

This program was excellent, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

This program couldn't have done any more to help immerse myself and my classmates in the culture of Morocco. We not only interacted with several different classes of Moroccan students but we were also able to discuss political and social issues with them during their class time. Furthermore, the students also took us around the city in their free time and showed us many of their favorite places. Our living arrangements were also fantastic, with us staying in the middle of town, amidst many other Moroccan households. Our house mom was extremely kind and answered all of our questions about the culture and daily rituals. She made us delicious food everyday and took us to the hammam daily, despite such regularity not being the norm for most Moroccan people. This program was very well organized to allow us as many educational opportunities as possible while also giving us a true sense of the culture with our housing and the amount of free time we had. I would definitely have done this trip over again, and I recommend that everyone go to Morocco through this program.

Living Situation:
great house mom and delicious food!

Cultural Immersion:
we were able to meet students and hang out with them in a social setting

A fantastic journey into the exploration of Morocco and its people.

I had never studied abroad before, but I could not have asked for a better experience than the one I had in Morocco. The accommodations were very comfortable and the food was excellent. Living in the medina is a must; it's the best way to soak up the culture. I thought that the trip was excellently planned and managed. It was great that most of the arrangements in the city were made by the study center.

Academics:
I really enjoyed the debates and conferences we had with Moroccan university students. Those occasions were far more instructive than any lecture as we could actually engage each other on the global issues of the day and get a first hand account of the perceptions and feelings of the young generation of Moroccans.

Living Situation:
Living situation was fantastic. The house was roomy and clean with incredible rooftop views of the city. I loved being right in the medina with easy access to the souks and hamams. Possibly the best part was the authentic home cooking I got to enjoy every day.

Cultural Immersion:
The living situation described above was the perfect way to approach cultural immersion. We were actually able to observe not only the culture of the medina, but also the private dynamic of a Moroccan family at home.

Program Administration:
Excellent organization. Always felt safe and secure.

Health and Safety:
Always felt safe.

Social Life:
I really just enjoyed the educational part of the trip, though we did venture out with some Moroccan college students we met. It was always a great time.

Flexible

Memorable experience was when I went to a great rock concert at the Renaissance Theatre in Rabat.

I chose this program because I wanted to go to Rabat and had to find a program on very short notice. MCAS was willing to accommodate.

I lived in a studio apartment that was owned by the family upstairs. It was in a very good neighborhood and was reasonably comfortable.

Flexible Program

I needed to find a program that would set me up with housing and a tutor on very short notice. MCAS came through. I cannot emphasize enough how fantastic of a tutor Abdelsalam is. He is patient, flexible, and professional to the utmost degree. My apartment was also nice. And Rabat is in my opinion one of the most comfortable cities in the Arab world, and it's a lot more interesting than it gets credit for being.

MCAS

Arriving to Morocco was an overwhelming experience. Morocco is an Islamic country and is apparent through out the city and within the peoples daily actives. Call of prayer takes place five times a day which is dictated by an intercom through out the city. As an American, I was stared at and received unwanted comments as I walked the city. Many day to day things that I was use to, was quickly replaced by unknown customs. However, these different customs where easy to adjust to. Such as eating with your hands, no air conditioning, and being covered head to toe. I highly recommend researching Moroccos practice and culture because I think it would make future volunteers experience more welcoming than overwhelming.

Luckily, with the help of MCAS employees, I was able to adjust and enjoy my time in Morocco. I have gained an amazing experience and have little negative feedback on the program. Program director was more than willing to cater to volunteer needs and make adjustments where needed.

Summer in Morocco

I studied Arabic daily with a wonderful teacher, and lived with a very kind and hospitable family. Everyone was great and I was very happy with the program.

It was very nice to travel with the family, work with a volunteer organization, and have one-on-one tutoring in Arabic. Being in Morocco for Ramadan was a very interesting cultural experience, but a bit challenging.

Two Weeks in Rabat: Cultural Immersion and Service Learning

I cannot comment about other aspects of this program other than Mr. Ben Sebaa's efforts to provide us with safe, comfortable housing and meals and a placement for preservice teachers. We were very satisfied with these arrangements and would rely on his expertise in these areas again.

Academics:
I was the lead instructor for a three-week study abroad tour. Ali Ben Sebaa helped to arrange housing and placements in a middle school in Rabat for two weeks of the trip for 11 undergraduate students and placements in a local middle school.

Living Situation:
We stayed in a traditional Moroccan house in the medina (old city) of Rabat. The house was owned by a woman and her family (who lived in the upstairs of the house). She cooked three meals for us a day. The food was excellent and she was a pleasure to work with and spoke a little English. The sleeping arrangements were a bit tight; I wouldn't recommend a larger group staying in this house, but I believe there are other houses also available.

Cultural Immersion:
Our experience of living at the house and in the medina and working at the school was powerful.

Program Administration:
Ali Ben Sebaa is a very hard working and tireless individual who speaks excellent English and is sensitive to the needs of students from abroad. He was always available and is very knowledgeable about Rabat, his hometown.

Health and Safety:
Very safe, but I would be concerned anywhere in Morocco with allowing groups of female college students to walk around at night unaccompanied by male escorts.

Social Life:
We had a great time living in the medina.

Orphanage Work in Morocco

The experience, on the whole, was very enlightening and welcoming. The support from the staff was great and the trip was very well organised. The work at the orphanage was great and I look forward to visiting Rabat as well as the orphanage in the near future!
