New for 2011, Volunteer Maldives is delighted to introduce Volunteer Programs in the neighboring island of Sri Lanka!

This teardrop shaped island of diverse beauty is just an hour away from the Maldives, and perfect for people wishing to volunteer just on its own, or we can easily arrange a combination of volunteering experiences visiting both countries for a very interesting contrast of environment, people, and cultures.

Our volunteers assistant at Mother Theresa's Orphanage, and St. John's Home for Girls, both of which are located in a town just outside of the city of Colombo, and volunteers can also get involved with teaching English with fun games and activities for pre-school children.

We will have new programs during the year, which includes conservation projects, and teaching in rural schools.

Between November and April, we can also arrange for our volunteers to experience the migration of Whales in the Southern waters - something definitely not to be missed!

Highlights

Sri Lankan people have known much heartache over the last several years, with the long civil war, which is now over, and natural disasters such as the Asian Tsunami which devastated a lot of the county with thousands of deaths and displaced people as well as severe flooding hampering re-housing efforts just in the last few months.

The people are resilient though, and very appreciative of volunteer help within the country, in areas such as teaching, and community development in rural areas. The children are incredibly open and enthusiastic to learn and secure themselves good futures, and welcome all our volunteers.

Sri Lanka is easy to get around, and during time off, volunteers can easily explore this stunning country, with its long sandy beaches, tropical forests, and misty tea plantations in the hills - there's something for everyone!
