Internships offer Milk the opportunity to develop new and existing programs and services while providing students (that's you!) with an arena to practice their skills, to investigate cultural, economic and social aspects of sexual attitudes, and to expand alliances with the Mexican health community. All this effort provides opportunities for education, research, and community involvement to improve the men's sexual & reproductive health.
Milk manages an internship program for college students or recent graduates who wish to gain experience in an international non-profit organization, working on diverse activities, including research, health promotion, coalition-building, marketing, funding, peer networking, grantwriting, special events, video/electronic media, website/editorial administration, and publications. You'll be busy meeting a diverse range of people, from community health professionals & government policy-makers to educators & corporate sponsors.
Through their work and participation in the internship, students are expected to achieve one or more of the following objectives:
- improve their Spanish language skills;
- contribute or complete a project or task;
- learn about key issues in intercultural communication;
- develop skills in non-governmental organizations;
- articulate their personal and professional goals;
- and, critically reflect upon the service they are providing, the role of the organization within the community, gender issues in the community/target population, and cultural values and norms that are manifest in Mexican society.
Academic credit may be earned in the students field of study, according to the college/university policies and requirements.
An internship represents a unique opportunity to work closely with leaders, experts and professionals, gaining insight & knowledge that can't be had from any other source there's just no substitute for hands-on, practical experience. In an international setting such as Mexico, the cultural enrichment adds an additional value to the internship; in addition to being fun and challenging, working to grow Milk into a national organization is an opportunity for new friendships, personal development and professional skills.
While an intern can expect to be richly rewarded with skills and understanding, the path to a truly valuable internship is to focus not on individual needs and wants, but on the lasting contribution of the organization. Learning how to successfully support and serve their goals and projects will help an intern gain knowledge that can help in academic and professional development.
