    Medicine Hat College offers you a progressive, communication based English as a Second Language program. The ESL program has a proven history of providing the language training necessary to be successful in all walks of life. Students completing the ESL program have gone on to earn many university and college degrees and diplomas. Additionally, many of our short-term students have improved their English to a level high enough to enable them to function successfully in the global marketplace.

    Course Structure:

    Our International English Studies Program consists of the following 8 classes:

    * Reading/Literature
    * Writing/Essay
    * Oral Communications
    * TOEFL Preparation
    * Listening
    * Conversation
    * Grammar
    * Canadian Culture/ Current Events

    As an English Studies student, you will receive 25 hours of instruction per week. Our low student-teacher ratio gives you individual attention from the instructor. In addition, you will have many opportunities to participate in activities outside the classroom and experience all that the surrounding area has to offer.

    Course Options:

    The ESL Program is designed to suit varying levels of English ability. A TOEFL score above 500 allows you to take one or two college level or university transfer courses while enrolled in the ESL program full time. These courses are offered at no additional charge.

    After successfully completing at least one semester in the Medicine Hat College Intensive ESL Program, you may be accepted into Medicine Hat College certificate, diploma, applied degree or university transfer programs with an official, paper-based TOEFL score of 527; or a computer based score of 197, or, if you have successfully completed ESL 100. All the other academic entrance requirements of the program must also be met prior to acceptance. In programs with more applicants than places, acceptances will be based on academic merit with places in the program awarded to the most academically qualified. Students considering application to one of Medicine Hat College's certificate, diploma, applied degree, or university transfer programs need to allow sufficient time (up to several months prior to application deadlines) for assessment of previous schooling and transcripts.
