The MDC is a leading research institute in the field of molecular medicine in Berlin. It offers an interdisciplinary training programme for PhD students who wish to develop a career at the interface of basic molecular biology and translational medicine.
The MDC is one of the 16 member institutions of the Helmholtz Association, the largest research organization in Germany. It currently hosts around 50 research groups working in the areas of cardiovascular & metabolic diseases, molecular cancer biology, neurobiology and medical system biology. The MDC is dedicated to promoting the education and training of future scientists. In 2003 the International PhD Programme Molecular Cell Biology was established as cooperation between the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the MDC. Since 2007 the Helmholtz Graduate School Molecular Cell Biology at the MDC offers an infrastructure for interdisciplinary training of all 300 MDC PhD students. The Graduate School works in collaboration with its partners the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (HU), the Freie Universitat Berlin (FU), and the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP). Integrated within this structure are additional PhD Programmes that focus on specific research topics in the areas of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases (TransCard), Molecular Neuroscience (MolNeuro) and Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB-NYU Exchange Programme).
All doctoral students at the MDC are mentored by a thesis committee that follows their progress and offers support throughout their PhD. The PhD students research project is complemented by an interdisciplinary curriculum including:
* Summer schools and advanced technology training
* Lectures and seminars by MDC group leaders and invited international guest speakers
* Travel allowances and collaborative visit support
* Access to MDC technology platforms such as deep sequencing, mass spectrometry, microscopy
* PhD symposia and retreats organized by PhD students
* Soft Skills courses like presentation or writing workshops, computer courses, training in statistics or ethics
