Year Founded: 1919

Masaryk University is the second largest university in the Czech Republic, with more than 43,000 students. Founded in 1919, it was named after T. G. Masaryk, the first President of Czechoslovakia. Nowadays, the university comprises over 1,200 fields of study at nine faculties - Law, Medicine, Science, Education, Economics and Administration, Informatics, Social Studies, and Sports Studies - and more than 200 departments and institutes. The university premises are concentrated close to Brno's historic old city centre, with part of natural sciences, medicine and sports located in the new campus in the South of the city. Masaryk University has become one of the fastest growing and most sought-after universities in Central Europe. Original research is a priority and students are encouraged to take active part in it. The university is dedicated to overall support for research and innovation, also focusing on the transfer of knowledge into the sphere of applied science and commercial use. This determination is clearly visible in the modern teaching and research area at the university campus Brno-Bohunice, and first Czech polar station in Antarctica. Studies at Masaryk University are truly international. Ten percent of its degree students come from abroad, and there are hundreds of exchange students from around the world each year. First in the Czech Republic, Masaryk University introduced a structured three-cycle curriculum and ECTS system of credits. Within its 90 years of existence, the university has been the alma mater of 134,000 alumni, who report high satisfaction and good career prospects in the graduate surveys.
