  • Description

This three-week cultural immersion course is designed to bring culture and branding to life within the context of the global marketplace. Taught by associate professor Dr. Jean Grow from the Diederich College of Communication, the course begins in the UK spending time in London, Manchester and Liverpool and then heads to Barcelona, Cadaques and Figueres, Spain.

Students will have an ethnographic training session at Flamingo International in London and learn about Spanish culture at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. Then the groups will hit the streets visiting advertising agencies such as EuroRSCG and Ogilvy, in London, and Double You and SCPF-JWT, in Barcelona. From there students will begin to ethnographically track brands in local culture, testing their new skills by conducting a series of field studies at places like Borough Market and the Bombay Sapphire showroom, in London, and in la Boqueria and Park Güell, in Barcelona. Working in teams, students will track brands while hunting for their ever-elusive cultural codes. Finally, they will share their finding on team blogs. This cultural immersion opportunity is ideal for advertising, public relations, business, social science and Spanish majors and minors.
