  • Description

    This three-credit program revolves around the study of ancient Greek drama. Students will work with the National Theatre of Cyprus (THOC) and will participate in performance exercises and improvisational workshops. The course is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in Greek drama from historical and modern perspectives. The program combines the study of ancient drama and modern improvisational performance techniques in the setting of a politically divided country.

    The program and course has three main objectives:

    * To study the text of a selected Ancient Greek drama
    * To work with theatre practitioners in the study of performance and design
    * To learn more about the unique social and political contexts of Cyprus through academic study, visits to significant Cypriot cultural sites, and interaction with Cypriot performers

  • Highlights

    * Shadowing a THOC production of a new translation of ELEKTRA. Students will watch Israeli director Hanaan Snir (who is also script adaptor) at work with Cypriot professional actors in rehearsal.
    * Improve workshops with Cypriots, taught by James Bailey of Comedy Sportz LA.
    * Attending performances of the International festival of Ancient Greek Drama in Cyprus in ancient sites.
    * This is a renowned festival that draws productions from all over the world to perform in Cyprus.
    * Tours to ancient archeological sites, including three ancient theatres that have been restored.
    * Beach trips to the Mediterranean sea!

    The program fee includes housing/hotel accommodation, academic fees, field trips, airfare, meals, arrival, departure transfers between the airport and hotel in Cyprus, and sickness/accident and emergency medical evacuation insurance. Students must submit their passport to OIE five weeks before the departure date.
