  • Description

    If you are looking to volunteer and teach English to children, then Sri Lanka offers an excellent opportunity to do this. Children in rural Sri Lanka are eager for education.

    Volunteers will teach children between 1 and 13 years-old. There are also opportunities to organize extra-curricular activities in the afternoon such as music, drama, arts, and sports.

    * Volunteers Work:

    You would be asked to put on activities for the residents. The nature of these would depend on who you were working with. Teaching English, art, reading, sport and other recreational activities would be warmly appreciated by the residents - who have little to stimulate them. Just as importantly, however, the children and the elderly need care, support, and love and attention that the permanent staff members cannot always provide.

    There is also work for artists - brightening up the home with murals. The residents would love helping with this. If you have medical qualifications in physiotherapy or nursing or have experience working with the mentally handicapped your skills would be much appreciated. You would need to have the confidence, common sense, and enthusiasm to initiate your own activities. The exact way you divide your time would be up to you, and your role would depend upon your skills and interests.

    You would normally live with other volunteers with a nearby host family, which is a close walk to your project site.

    Volunteers are needed to put on activities for the children. Sports are particularly needed, and anyone capable of coaching netball, badminton, athletics, or cricket would be very welcome. There is plenty of space for this but facilities are basic.

  • Highlights

    Volunteering in Sri Lanka is often about assisting communities that have been damaged by the tsunami or individuals that have lost their families, homes, or their humble business.

    The projects are based in the same area so volunteers can enjoy the social benefits of living together, or you might find other projects based in different places more suitable to your needs and skills. However, to minimize the cultural impact of our work, we normally have just two volunteers working on each project at any one time.

    We have our hosts staff in Sri Lanka who provide volunteers with the support and the backing necessary to carry out safe and successful projects.

    Volunteer Opportunities in Sri Lanka include teaching in schools, working with the disabled, helping at orphanages and residential homes, and also carrying out coastal conservation work on turtle nesting sites.

  • Qualifications

    Your energy and skills are always needed, but you would also enjoy the experience of becoming immersed in the warm, welcoming communities that host the projects. They have been carefully selected, visited and assessed by James Chapman.
