Local hospitals in Kenya lack the resources and manpower required to provide proper care to their patients. Volunteers are urgently needed to assist doctors in rural hospitals and community clinics.
Our medical volunteer programs in Nairobi place volunteers at small medical clinics that treat a wide range of patients.
The medical clinics treat newborn babies to seniors, for a wide range of conditions like colds/flu, injuries, malaria, pregnancy and childbirth, etc. Serious, life-threatening cases are referred to large hospitals in Nairobi.
Volunteers perform tasks like taking vital signs, dressing wounds, administering shots, drawing blood, holding babies while they are being treated, helping to screen and organize patients, assisting staff with getting medicines/supplies, and generally helping out in whatever capacity they might need you.
Placement tasks vary, depending on education, qualifications, and past experience. While volunteers will not be performing major operations, they will assist doctors. Participants will gather vital signs, such as blood pressure, height and weight, and temperature. You may also be asked to work in local health camps, distributing medicine, and counseling patients, treating minor wounds, and providing basic information about health, nutrition, and sanitation.
Most of our coordinators run local level organizations and work hard to address local issues affecting the life of their communities. In addition to our international coordinators, we work directly with local schools, orphanages, development agencies, and community organizations. We strive to ensure each program meets the high standards of quality as expected and deserved by our volunteers.
Volunteers must be studying or practicing in the healthcare field, as doctors, nurses, EMT's, and medical and nursing students with clinical experience. We do not accept premed students into the program.
