  • Description

Santander, located in northern Spain, offers students an incredible study abroad experience on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. A popular holiday destination, visitors to Santander enjoy a variety of beaches as well as historical sites such as the Palace of La Magdalena. Surrounded by lush trees and rolling hills, Santander is a perfect combination of an urban environment and natural beauty. The cultural life in the city is intensified during the summer months by activities such as the annual international music festival, as well as theater and dance events.

The LPI office is conveniently located at the Las Llamas campus of the Menendez Pelayo International University. At the LPI office, students can receive tutoring, check out books, or simply visit and practice the Spanish language. LPI students may also use the university facilities, including computer labs with internet access. LPIs full-time resident staff is dedicated to maximizing the experience of every student participating in the Santander program. They will conduct the on-site orientation, lead excursions, and set up intercambios with local students. Visit the LPI website for info on the resident staff.

Founded in 1932, the university was developing its academic programs when it was halted by the breakout of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. It was re-established a decade later under the name of Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP). With a complete program of courses and seminars conducted by prestigious specialists from both Spanish and foreign universities, the UIMP has gained recognition as one of the most outstanding universities in Spain. More than 5,000 students pass through the universitys classrooms throughout the summer. The UIMP also offers a wide range of cultural activities such as concerts, theatre performances, art exhibits, and poetry readings. The Spanish language and culture courses are held at the UIMPs Las Llamas campus. This campus is equipped with many facilities: a complete library geared towards foreign students, a video library with Spanish films and documentaries, a language lab, as well as various athletic facilities such as basketball and tennis courts.
