Salamanca is home to the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain and is an ideal place to study abroad. Originally a fortified Roman camp, Salamanca is one of the most magnificent Renaissance cities in Europe; being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, and a European City of Culture in 2002. The city is small enough to navigate by foot, allowing students to gain an intimate understanding of the local landscape and culture. Sandstone colored buildings fill the city, earning Salamanca the nickname of La Ciudad Dorada, the Golden City.
The LPI office is conveniently located next to the university and is about a seven minute walk from the Plaza Mayor. At the LPI office students can check their email, receive tutoring, check out books, or simply visit and practice the Spanish language. Each of LPIs resident staff is dedicated to maximizing the students experience while studying abroad. They will conduct the on-site orientation, lead excursions, set up intercambios with local students, and assist students with any school-related questions or problems. Visit the LPI website for photos and bios of the resident staff.
The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218 by Alfonso IX of León, is not only the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain, but also one of the most beautiful. Ideally located near the Plaza Mayor and the Tormes River, the university has educated many great contributors to Spanish literature and humanities. Approximately 30,000 Spanish students and 7,000 international students are taught by a highly distinguished faculty that also conducts research in 53 departments. Students have access to the library within their department as well as the Santa Maria de Los Angeles library and the general library. These amazing libraries have beckoned scholars for centuries.

LPI, the high school division of International Studies Abroad (ISA) was established in 1989 to provide an academically challenging and culturally thorough study abroad program for U.S. high school students. Based in Austin, Texas, LPI reaches out to provide study abroad opportunities to students from across the United States. LPI works closely with fully-accredited foreign universities and the LPI resident staff in each program location in order to provide cultural activities, tutoring services, language exchanges, volunteer opportunities, and numerous possibilities for improving language performance. Through LPI, students are able to equip themselves with a working knowledge of a foreign language, earn college credit, experience another culture and explore the area around their program city through cultural excursions.
