Cusco is considered the Inca capital of Peru. Situated in the Peruvian Andes Mountains in the southeastern region of the country, it is home to both the Temple of the Sun, once the most important temple for the Incas, and the nearby Inca archaeological site of Machu Picchu. The Spaniards conquered Cusco in the 16th century, preserving the basic structure, but building Baroque churches and palaces over the ruins. Cusco has special weather due to both its altitude as well as its closeness to the equator; the average highs during the month of July are 70° F and lows are at 30° F. Today, the city attracts tourism from all over the world, due to the preservation of its culture displayed in the amazing archaeological sites, architecture, and colorful Peruvian dress. The city thrives with tourism, commerce, and activities and many find the city incredibly friendly and walkable.
In Cusco, LPI offers students 2 or 4 week intensive Spanish language programs. Students will attend classes for 3-4 hours a day Monday through Friday in Spanish Grammar, Conversation and Culture. Class schedules will be confirmed once the students have arrived and language levels have been determined. Students will be in classes with other LPI participants.
Students have access to the LPI office where they can check their email, receive tutoring, check out books, or simply visit and practice the Spanish language. LPI's resident staff is dedicated to maximizing the students experience while studying abroad. They will conduct the on-site orientation, lead excursions, set up intercambios with local students, and assist students with any school-related questions or problems. LPI, the high school division of International Studies Abroad (ISA) was established in 1989 to provide an academically challenging and culturally thorough study abroad program for U.S. high school students. Based in Austin, Texas, LPI reaches out to provide study abroad opportunities to students from across the United States. LPI works closely with fully-accredited foreign universities and the LPI resident staff in each program location in order to provide cultural activities, tutoring services, language exchanges, volunteer opportunities, and numerous possibilities for improving language performance. Through LPI, students are able to equip themselves with a working knowledge of a foreign language, earn college credit, experience another culture and explore the area around their program city through cultural excursions.
